Hair Beauty Tips

Bid goodbye to bad hair days with this list of volume-boosting hair care tools and techniques, compiled to help you get the most out of your hair.

  • DO turn your head upside down to blow-dry when you are in a pinch and don't have time to air- or pat-dry it. This is an easy way to give your thin hair a powerful boost, making it appear more voluminous. Focus on the roots for maximum results.
  • DO lather up with a volumising shampoo and conditioner duo. Look for a gentler shampoo that is residue-free, weightless, and sulfate free.
  • DO add volume to your tresses. When you can't squeeze in a shower, use a dry shampoo with cornstarch or rice starch and a clear formulation. These products soak up the oil that’s dragging your hair down, especially at the roots, offering more volume where you need it most.
  • DO add a touch of ‘Va-Va-Voom’ to your oily strands. Dab at your hairline and front layers of hair surrounding your face using blotting papers or, if in a bind, paper towels. Removing the oil from the roots and around your face will keep your hair looking as voluminous as possible.
  • DO adopt a more tousled, casual, wash-and-go style as your new signature look. This will be easier to pull off and maintain with thinner hair, and any trouble spots can easily be handled with a little back brushing to give the appearance of more volume. Shaggy, rock-star style is your new go-to!
  • DON'T avoid colouring your hair - just stick to the right shades. That means no extremely light or dark hues – these can expose and draw attention to any thinning spots you might have. Instead, select deep and rich shades that are close to your natural shade. Thinning hair can actually benefit from semi-permanent or permanent hair colour to boost body – the dye coats the strands and offers a slight volume enhancement. Just don't overdo it, as over-processing thin hair can damage it. And don’t go DIY (delicate hair responds differently to colouring). Instead, make an appointment with a professional stylist, who’ll know exactly how to dye your hair without damaging it.
  • DON'T use hot rollers. Instead, try Velcro rollers that don't use heat. Set them for about 20 minutes while you finish applying makeup and getting ready.
  • DON'T go overboard with heavy conditioning products, especially at the roots. Focus on the ends of your hair for a glossy finish that doesn’t compromise the volume.
  • DON'T be too rough with your hair. If your hair gets matted or tangled, work your way from the bottom of the hair up towards the root, pulling a brush gently through the strands until you can brush from the root to tip without it getting caught.
